An Evening About “THE WORST VICE IS ADVICE” – 26/10

This will be a regular meeting with 4 speeches, 4 evaluations and a round of Table Topics — an improvised speaking game where guests are free to participate. ADMISSION IS 100% FREE. SPEAKING IS 100% OPTIONAL.

The evening will revolve around “THE WORST VICE IS ADVISE”

Baz Lurhman said it back in 1999. “Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts & recycling it for more than it’s worth.”

Fast-forward 25 years and we’re living in an age where we’re besieged left & right by catchy quote memes and “20, 7 – no – 13 things you should know about…” blog posts from ted-talky online guru wannabes. “Red meat causes cancer & fat is bad for both you & the planet”, but also, “follow this red meat fatty carnivore keto diet if you want to reset your gut & truly heal your body”.

In our ever-increasingly diverse reality, can anybody really truly know what the best course of action is for someone else with regards to their own life? Doesn’t dispensing advice always feel like a bit of a self-congratulatory farce? How do you determine who & what to listen to?

We wouldn’t dream of telling you to never listen to any advice, because that would be giving advice. So come & see for yourself what’s the best & worst advice our club members have ever given or received, and make up your own damn mind what works for you.
